Children thrive when they are immersed in nature and natural learning! Forest Kindergarten and School is a type of education held almost exclusively outdoors, guiding children as they play, explore, and learn in a natural environment—regardless of the weather. Discover more about this groundbreaking movement that is gaining in popularity locally as well as around the world and providing research-based, positive outcomes.

These courses equip teachers with principles that can be incorporated into existing curriculum or form the foundation of a new program. Taught at local forest school sites and facilitated by Jean Lomino, PhD, director of the Wauhatchie School located at the base of Chattanooga’s Lookout Mountain, they can be taken for academic credit on the master’s level (three credits for each class).

What is Forest Kindergarten?

The Forest Kindergarten idea originated in Denmark in the 1950s as a way to encourage children to appreciate, explore, and learn in a natural environment.

Educators have observed that when children spend time outdoors it sparks imaginative play and creativity, while improving hand-eye coordination, balance, and physical strength. Forest Kindergarten lessons are designed to flow naturally from students’ interests and observations.

Research has shown that students who have participated in Forest Kindergarten and other similar programs are more attentive, better behaved, and more prepared for academics in elementary, middle, and high school.
